Nearly 30 environmental groups along the East Coast are asking the Obama administration to permanently halt plans for oil and gas drilling in the Atlantic and Gulf regions.
The Southern Environmental Law Center submitted formal comments on behalf of the 28 groups Wednesday, the deadline for public comments on the Department of Interior's five-year offshore drilling plan. The plan covers potential drilling from 2012 through 2017.
Virginia was set to be the first Atlantic state with offshore drilling until Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar suspended the leasing process in May because of the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
Virginia's planned lease sale remains in the proposed five-year plan. The groups are asking that it and any other drilling in the region be removed from the plan.
