Va. Inmate Dies of Heat Exposure

July 1, 2010

The state medical examiner's office says an inmate at the Richmond City Jail died from heat exposure.

Fifty-four-year-old Grant R. Sleeper died Saturday at VCU Medical Center, eight days after he was transferred from the jail. Authorities also are investigating the death of a second inmate.

Richmond Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr. says 49-year-old Kerry Wayne Bennett apparently died in his sleep Wednesday. The sheriff says he's awaiting autopsy results. The jail was built in the 1960s and the men's tiers don't have air conditioning.
