No Charges for Driver Who Ran Over Homeless Man

July 1, 2010

Virginia Beach prosecutors are not filing charges against a city employee involved in a fatal accident in which a homeless man was run over by a dump truck as he slept on the beach.

Fifty-two-year-old Michael Knockett died on Monday when he was run over by the city vehicle as he was sleeping in a lawn chair. The dump truck was collecting trash from garbage barrels on the beach.

Authorities say the lead investigator in the case met with representatives from the commonwealth's attorney's office on Wednesday, and the prosecutors declined to pursue charges against the driver.
