Portsmouth Officer Accused of Assaulting Prisoner

A Portsmouth police officer accused of assaulting a prisoner is on administrative leave.

The Portsmouth Police Department says 45-year-old Eric Paul Sjoberg was placed on administrative leave Thursday after a grand jury charged him with assault and battery, a misdemeanor.

The police department says the alleged assault occurred May 26 as Sjoberg was transporting a prisoner. The prisoner wasn't injured.

Details of the incident weren't released.

Sjoberg has been with the police department since 2004.
