Fairfax County police say thieves have swiped about $500,000 worth of landscaping equipment over the last several months.
Police said Wednesday that since February, there have been 75 reported incidents involving such thefts around Franconia. The missing items include backpack blowers, chain saws, trimmers, floor buggers and air compressors. Officials say the equipment was taken from businesses and work vehicles parked in residential areas.
Detectives believe at least one group is committing the thefts, possibly using a pickup or box truck.
Police say they have beefed up efforts at various spots with surveillance cameras, nonuniformed officers and extra patrols.
