Jens Soering to Remain in Virginia for Prison Sentence

July 7, 2010

Former University of Virginia student Jens Soering will remain in Virginia for his prison term.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the U.S. Justice Department will not proceed with a request to transfer Soering from Virginia to a German prison.

The department says it can't consider the request without the backing of Governor Bob McDonnell. Former Governor Tim Kaine approved a request from German officials to transfer Soering back to his homeland.

He's currently serving two life sentences for killing his girlfriend's parents in Bedford County in 1985.
