Richmond police have identified a woman who died while swimming in the James River.
Police say rescuers were unable to revive 40-year-old Portia B. Smith of Richmond after she was pulled from the river Wednesday evening. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire Department Lt. Shawn Jones says authorities don't know whether the woman drowned or had a medical condition. The body was taken to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.
A man called 911 at about 7 p.m. Wednesday and reported a female friend he was swimming with went under the water.
