The No. 2 gas producer of natural gas in Virginia is seeking dismissal of a lawsuit that claims the company stole natural gas belonging to landowners.
EQT Corp. filed the motion this week in U.S. District Court in Abingdon.
It is aimed a lawsuit filed in June that seeks to represent southwest Virginia landowners whose mineral rights were leased by a state board. They have never been paid.
EQT claims its activity was protected by state law.
A similar suit was also filed last month, this one taking aim at Consol Energy and its subsidiary, CNX Gas Co. The companies are based in the Pittsburgh area.
The lawsuits seek billions of dollars for Virginia landowners in the regions gas-producing counties.
