Waynesboro Teacher Killed in Apparent Murder-Suicide

July 8, 2010

The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide in which a Waynesboro middle school teacher was killed. Deputies say the female teacher was in the process of getting a divorce.

The victim has been identified as Nancy Sullenberger, a special education teacher at Kate Collins Middle School.

Police say the woman's husband went to her house in Fairfield around 9 p.m. Wednesday, shot her with a handgun and then shot himself. According to deputies, the teacher's son was at the home when the husband arrived. He ran away and called law enforcement.

Deputies also say there was a protective order in place against the husband because of a domestic assault charge in April.
