Va. Records Show Lower Demand for Gun Permits

July 12, 2010

State police records show fewer Virginians are seeking concealed handgun permits this year than in 2009.

The records show a nearly 40 percent drop through the first half of 2010. The state issued 26,317 permits from January through June, down from 43,273 during the same period a year earlier.

Handgun permit applications spiked 21 percent from 2008 to 2009. Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave says fears that President Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress would tighten gun laws have eased and many people who wanted permits now have them.
