3 Va.-based Marines Drown During Holiday Swim

July 13, 2010

Three Norfolk-based Marines drowned while swimming off a recreational beach at Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba.

Marine officials say Cpl. Paul Fagundes, Lance Cpl. Giovani Cruz and Lance Cpl. James May Jr. were assigned to Fleet Anti-terrorism Team (FAST), Alpha Company, 6th Platoon. The three were in a group of five Marines who were swimming off Cable Beach on July 4.

Two made it safely to shore, and reported that the others were in distress. The three were taken to the base hospital, where attempts to revive them were unsuccessful.

A memorial service was held last week at the base.
