Va. Teacher Anoints Students with "Holy Oil"

July 16, 2010

A Norfolk elementary-school teacher has resigned after administrators discovered that she anointed her fifth-grade students with "holy oil."

School division officials confirmed that the unnamed Jacox Elementary teacher performed "religious practices" in the classroom and may have done so throughout her three-year stint in the city school system. Officials said she resigned after an investigation that took place after a parent complained.

The controversy follows another investigation into complaints that a principal at another city elementary school led staff and students in prayer before standardized tests and pressured people to attend prayer or Bible sessions.
