Shorewood Packaging says it plans to close its Newport News operations in October, citing shifting customer demand and the weak economy.
The packaging manufacturer says the shutdown will eliminate 35 jobs. Last year, Shorewood ceased lithographic printing operations at the same plant, putting 100 people out of work.
The plant is owned by International Paper and opened in 1979. It runs two printing presses, producing packaging primarily for tobacco manufacturers.
