Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly crash after a car drove into the path of a freight train in Front Royal. The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday on Fairground Road. (view a map of the area)
Police say the train was heading south when a woman drove her car through the railroad crossing and was hit by the train.
VSP Trooper P.M. Neff says, "It appears the silver passenger vehicle went through the crossing arms, both arms were down, lights were flashing. The train had the horn blaring while she was crossing through."
Police say the woman was the only person in the car and that the train's emergency equipment was activated as soon as the accident occurred.
The investigation into the wreck is ongoing.
