The Franklin County Sheriff says a deputy shot and killed a man who fired on him at a home near Rocky Mount.

Sheriff Ewell Hunt says the man killed in the Saturday afternoon shooting was Rocky Mount resident 40-year-old George "Max" Frye II.

The Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting, which occurred at the home of Rocky Mount area woman.

Hunt says the deputy, whose name has not been released, went to
the home after a 911 call advising that Frye was there with a handgun and had discharged the weapon.

Hunt says the deputy was searching the home when he saw Frye assaulting the woman.

When Frye shot, Hunt says the deputy returned fire and killed him.
