Va. Firefighters Die in Wreck

July 27, 2010

Police are investigating a wreck that killed Rocky Mount's fire chief and another volunteer firefighter as they were responding to a call.

Virginia State Police say 59-year-old Posey Dillon and 57-year-old William Daniel Altice were killed Monday when their fire truck was hit by an SUV, flipped three times and landed on top of a car.

The SUV's driver suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening. The other driver didn't appear to be injured.

State police say the SUV entered Old Frankling Turnpike as the fire truck was heading eastbound and hit the truck. The fire truck's water load shifted, causing it to flip.

The fire truck's siren and emergency lights were on.

No charges have been filed.
