Several Va. Counties Request Disaster Declarations

August 3, 2010

The number of Virginia counties requesting agricultural disaster declarations because of drought conditions is growing.

Appomattox County's supervisors voted Monday to submit a request for a drought declaration to Gov. Bob McDonnell's office.

Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services spokeswoman Elaine Lidholm says 14 other counties already have submitted requests.

An agricultural disaster declaration would allow farmers to obtain low-interest loans and receive other assistance.

Lidholm says state agencies will begin assessing damages in counties requesting disaster declarations in September when the growing season ends.
