Aging Va. General Assembly Building Needs Repairs

January 27, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A new report says the aging General Assembly Building on Capitol Square has asbestos in one tower and multiple fire and safety code issues.

The report says the four-building complex needs extensive repairs.

The findings were presented to the Senate Finance subcommittee on capital outlay earlier this month.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Virginia Department of General Services director Richard F. Silwoski plans to meet with his staff Monday to begin identifying costs and options for repairing the problems.

Other structures on Capitol Square also need renovations, including the Virginia Supreme Court Building and the Ninth Street Office Building.

Senate Rules Committee chair Ryan T. McDougloe says lawmakers are going to have to come up with a plan.
