Alpha Natural Resources plans to idle four coal mines and two preparation plants and reduce production at several other mines in Kentucky.
Alpha says it also plans to close satellite offices in Richmond, Va., Denver, Latrobe, Pa., and Linthicum Heights, Md., by the end of the year and consolidate support functions.
Bristol, Va.-based Alpha announced the cuts Friday in a news release. The company says about 150 jobs will be lost. Another 286 affected workers will be offer jobs at other operations in Kentucky, southern West Virginia and Virginia.
The mining operations to be idled are in Pike and Martin counties.
The company attributes the cuts to declining demand for steam coal and new federal pollution regulations for coal-fired power plants.
