The president of Appalachian Power is wading into a key legislative race in Virginia, accusing Democrat Ward L. Armstrong of tarnishing the company's name.
Charles R. Patton makes the claim in a letter to District 9 shareholders of AEP, the parent of Appalachian Power.
In the letter dated Nov. 4, Patton said Armstrong's "relentless attacks" are harming the utility's reputation. Patton encourages shareholders to vote on Tuesday, but stops short of suggesting they vote for Republican incumbent Charles Poindexter.
Armstrong's campaign released the Patton letter and claims Patton encourages shareholders to vote against Armstrong.
In a statement, the House Democratic leader said Appalachian Power wants to see him defeated Tuesday to silence his criticism of Appalachian rate hikes.
Patton blames federal regulations and the price of coal for the increases.
