Average Va. Power Bill Up Since Deregulation Ended

A report from The State Corporation Commission finds that electric bills have gone up since the state started a plan to deregulate power providers.
On average, a residential customer has seen bills rise 18 percent in the past five years. However, Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative customers' bills have fallen five percent during the same period.
A lot of those higher costs are from higher fuel costs, and the cost of building new power plants being passed on to the customers.
