LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - The bayonet of a vandalized Doughboy statue in Lynchburg has been recovered from the depths of the James River.

The bronze bayonet was recovered Friday by a state police dive team in 15 feet of water. Despite the depths, senior trooper Andrew Trombley said the bayonet's shape and pattern could be seen on the river bottom near the Amherst-Bedford county line.

The News & Advance reports this is the second time the blade has been broken off from the Doughboy, a World War I memorial and beloved icon.

Veterans put together a $3,000 reward for its return.

A woman charged with taking the bayonet helped police narrow the search.

Doughboy commonly refers to Marines or Army personnel who served in World War I.
