New Virginia specialty license plates with a Blue Ridge Parkway theme are being distributed to motorists.
The General Assembly approved legislation creating the plates in 2011. The plates began arriving on Monday after the Department of Motor Vehicles approved the design and began production.
Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway sold nearly 500 registrations to gain the plate's approval.
The Roanoke-based nonprofit's president, Richard Wells, tells The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/KJepuc) the group is excited that the plates are now available.
The plates cost $25. All money from the first 1,000 sales will go to the DMV. Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway will receive $15 for every sale after that.
The group plans to use the money to support overlook maintenance, tree plantings and other parkway projects.
