Authorities in Virginia are investigating the apparent drowning of a Mecklenburg County, N.C., girl at Smith Mountain Lake.
The 12-year-old girl was on a float next to a dock Friday when she fell in the water. Media reports quote the Franklin County Sheriff's Office as stating the girl was not wearing a life jacket.
Her body was discovered underwater with sonar. Her identity has not been released.
An autopsy is planned.
The incident occurred near Penhook Point in Franklin County.
Officials said the girl was with her family visiting relatives at the lake.
