Searchers have recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy who disappeared in the ocean after stepping off a sandbar at Virginia Beach.
Virginia Beach police identified the victim as Lakee Copeland of Chesapeake.
Police said Monday in a news release that Copeland, three other children and an adult were playing on a sandbar about 30 yards off the beach when a tide came in Sunday afternoon. They stepped off the sandbar into water that was over their heads. As they struggled to swim, witnesses rescued the adult and the other children.
Police say the witnesses didn't know another child was with the group.
An officer patrolling the shoreline found the boy's body in the surf shortly around 12:07 a.m. Monday.
