Authorities have closed the beach at Claytor Lake State Park following a drowning.
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation says a 20-year-old man drowned Monday while swimming.
A lifeguard noticed the man and another swimmer appeared to be in distress. The lifeguard rescued the other swimmer but the victim disappeared underwater.
Lifeguards and park staff found the victim about 10 minutes later. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The beach is closed Tuesday.
