After years of planning and controversy, construction crews finally broke ground this morning on the new Orange County Wal-Mart.
Shovels dug into the dirt to kick off construction of the new center. Preservationists challenged the original site which was near the Wildnerness Battlefield.
Wal-Mart abandoned that plan right before the lawsuit's trial. The new store will be located several miles away from the battlefield.
Residents say that it will be great to have a place to shop nearby.
"Currently, we have to travel more than 20 miles each direction to do major shopping. So other than a grocery store, we are looking forward to another major retailer in the area," said Pat Rowland, Lake of the Woods Association.
The new center is expected to bring 300 jobs. Hiring will start next spring.
