Critics of Clinic Regulations Speaking Out

May 10, 2012

Opponents of Virginia's new abortion clinic regulations are taking their case to the state Board of Health.

A group called "OpposeTRAP" plans to bombard board members with phone calls, emails and personal visits Thursday. TRAP is an acronym for Targeted Regulations on Abortion Providers.

The General Assembly passed legislation in 2011 requiring most abortion clinics to meet the same strict building standards as new hospital construction. Emergency regulations approved by the board last September have been in effect since Jan. 1, and the board is scheduled to vote on permanent regulations June 15.

Critics have said the regulations will force most clinics to close. But license applications show that 20 of 23 clinics affected by the regulations already comply or plan changes to meet the requirements.
