Culpeper's historic downtown is among five national winners in the 2012 Great American Main Street Awards.
The recognition comes from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It cites Culpeper Renaissance Inc., which the trust says has asserted the town's Southern charm and eclectic small businesses following a 2011 earthquake.
In recognizing Culpeper, the trust said a public-private effort helped revive a once-dormant downtown, saving a historic train depot and bringing banks, boutiques and other businesses to Davis Street.
The other winners are Bath, Maine, Jacksonville, Ill., Valley Junction/West Des Moines, Iowa, and Washington, Mo.
The winners were chosen by a national jury of former award winners, community development professionals and journalists.
