A state environmental official says the health risk of a sewage spill into the James River is probably low.
But Rebecca LePrell with the Department of Environmental Quality says there's a risk from swimming in any water body that's not treated. She tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch that people generally should not swim in streams after a sewage release for about three days.
State officials say 2.6 million gallons of partially treated sewage spilled from Lynchburg's sewage treatment plant on Saturday after it lost power.
