DNA Leads to Arrest in 1991 Slaying in Waynesboro

January 13, 2011

A DNA match has led to the arrest of a suspect in Waynesboro's oldest unsolved murder case.

The News Virginian reports that a grand jury indicted 53-year-old Roosevelt Johnson of Waynesboro on a second-degree murder charge this week. Johnson surrendered to police Wednesday morning.

Johnson is accused of fatally beating 53-year-old Arvetta June Davis in 1991.

Waynesboro police Sgt. Kelly Walker told the newspaper that the Virginia Department of Forensic Science made a routine comparison of DNA that turned up a "cold hit" in September.
