A detective says a Liberty University student had a hammer when a security officer fatally shot him at an off-campus women's dormitory.
Police say 19-year-old Joshua Hathaway of Lubbock, Texas, was shot early Tuesday.
Media outlets report search warrants filed in Lynchburg Circuit Court after the shooting indicate Hathaway told the security officer he had been robbed and his car had been stolen.
An affidavit says as the security officer began investigating, Hathaway pulled out a hammer and began assaulting the officer in the dormitory's lobby before being shot.
The officer was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment, and has since been released.
The affidavit also indicates that Hathaway lived in a campus residential building across the street. His car was found in a nearby parking lot.
