PORTSMOUTH, Virginia (AP)— The discovery of unexploded naval ordnance has halted river traffic on portions of the southern branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake.
The Coast Guard said the discovery occurred Friday when contractors working on the Gilmerton Bridge uncovered the ordnance. A Navy explosive bomb disposal unit is examining the ordnance.
As a precaution, Chesapeake police have blocked all train and bridge traffic.
Maritime traffic is closed from Money Point to the Interstate 64 High Rise Bridge.
