One of the doctors who advised state health officials on drafting new abortion clinic regulations has been appointed to the Virginia Board of Health.
Gov. Bob McDonnell appointed Dr. John Seeds to the board Friday. Seeds is senior associate dean of the VCU School of Medicine.
Some of the half-dozen members of the medical advisory panel on clinic regulations were upset that the Department of Health did not follow their recommendations, but Seeds was not among them. He supported the regulations, which included a controversial provision to require clinics to meet the same strict building standards as new hospitals.
The board later voted 7-4 to strike that provision. Two members who voted to keep the provision, Eric Deaton of Danville and Amy Vest of Virginia Beach, were reappointed by McDonnell.
