Dominion Seeking Source of Radioactive Water in Louisa

November 2, 2010

Dominion Virginia Power is seeking the source of low-level radiation found in groundwater by one of its monitoring stations at its North Anna nuclear power plant in Louisa.

The utility informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of the increase in tritium levels in a filing last week with the agency.

Dominion said in the filing the increased radioactive reading does not pose a health hazard to plant employees or the public.

Tritium is the radioactive isotope of hydrogen and is produced in nuclear reactors.

"The Richmond Times-Dispatch" reported Monday on the radioactive groundwater.
