Philanthropist Doris Buffett is being honored as the 2012 Virginian of the Year by the Virginia Press Association.
The sister of investor Warren Buffett is set to receive the award at the VPA's annual convention in Roanoke on Friday.
The Free Lance-Star editor Ed Jones nominated Buffett for the award. He described her as a "shining example of generosity."
The 83-year-old resident of Fredericksburg committed to giving millions of dollars from her mother's trust away through her Sunshine Lady Foundation. Since its creation in 1996, the foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants.
The annual award is usually given to a Virginia native who has achieved prominence in a career such as show business, sports or politics.
