Goochland County's embattled treasurer has resigned, just as the governor started the process to formally oust her.
Brenda Grubbs resigned in a letter faxed to county officials, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said the letter arrived just before 5 p.m. Friday, about the same time Gov. Bob McDonnell's office announced that was starting proceedings to remove her from office.
Grubbs was arrested Feb. 2 on one count of embezzlement. Search warrants show that she had transferred as much as $135,000 in county money to foreign contacts, including a man in Nigeria identified as Bobby Johnson.
Virginia State Police and the state auditor of public accounts are investigating the Goochland treasurer's office. Grubbs had worked there since 1988.
