A former Bedford County supervisor faces charges of embezzling money from a volunteer fire department and from a family's benefit account.
Virginia State Police tell media outlets that a grand jury indicted 66-year-old Earl Anthony Ware on Thursday on seven counts each of embezzlement and money laundering.
Ware was a member of the Board of Supervisors for 25 years before he lost a re-election bid in 2004.
He is charged with taking $11,000 from a benefit count set up for a family whose mother died. He also is charged with taking $3,000 from the Big Island Volunteer Fire Department.
Botetourt County Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney John Alexander has been appointed as special prosecutor for the case.
