Fire Destroys Historic Virginia Plantation Home

December 15, 2012

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the cause of a Nelson County fire that destroyed the historic Norwood plantation.

The Sunday night fire in Wingina is being investigated by the Nelson County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police's arson division.

The News & Advance reports that the white, 6,000 square-foot, two-story farm house had been on the market for $1.75 million in 2009.

It originally was built in the 1850s by Mayo Cabell as a gift for his son, William, when he graduated from the University of Virginia in 1853.

The house was unoccupied and being remodeled as a second home. No injuries were reported.
