Rain falling on ground
May 18, 2012
The U.S. Forest Service has closed portions of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in Virginia because of heavy rain and flooding.
The Forest Service said Thursday the closures follow a drenching of nearly 9 inches of rain earlier this week. Crews are still assessing the damage.
Forest Service spokesman Michael R. Williams said the road and trail closings are located in Botetourt and Rockbridge counties.
Six forest roads were affected by the rains. Some are closed or open only to vehicles with a high clearance.
Some trails and recreation areas are also affected.
