For the 13th year, medical professionals are providing free care to the needy in southwest Virginia.
Hundreds lined up Friday as the Remote Area Medical expedition began providing medical and dental care in Wise. The services are offered by RAM and The Health Wagon, a local organization that provides free medical care year-round.
The Bristol Herald-Courier reports that some people arrived as early as Thursday to make sure they'd be treated. The care is being offered through the weekend.
By early Friday, 1,500 numbers had been given out to patients.
Meantime, more than 1,000 volunteers are on hand at the Wise County Fairgrounds to care for them.
The volunteers come to Wise from a variety of places. Virginia's medical and dental schools send large groups every year.
