The City of Galax had the highest jobless rate in Virginia for July, with 16.2 percent of the residents there out of work.
The Virginia Employment Commission says the number of people without jobs there has nearly doubled from June to July because of layoffs in several fields: Mainly in construction, the wholesale trade and manufacturing.
Arlington County had Virginia's lowest rate with 3.8 percent in July.
The statewide rate for July was 5.8 percent compared with the national rate of 7.7 percent.
