Gloucester Co. Man Drowns off Yorktown Beach

October 21, 2012

YORKTOWN, Va. (AP) - Virginia Marine Police are investigating the death of a Gloucester County man who drowned off Yorktown Beach.

Virginia Marine Resources Commission spokesman John Bull says 30-year-old John Haywood of Hayes was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly before 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bull tells The Daily Press (http://bit.ly/TBoeKr ) that Haywood was fishing with friends on a boat near the beach when he jumped out and swam to a bar. He says Haywood put his life jacket on and swam back to the boat four or five hours later. He was found unresponsive a few feet away.
