Gov. McDonnell Signs Several Bills to Make Schools Safer

June 5, 2013

On Wednesday, Governor Bob McDonnell ceremoniously signed several bills designed to make Virginia's schools and campuses safer.

The laws come as a result of the work of McDonnell's School and Campus Safety Task Force, which was formed after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Some of the laws include creating grants to help schools improve security, requiring each school system to have an emergency manager, and mandates school lock-down drills.

"We're also setting up something called Threat Assessment Teams," said Gov. McDonnell. "Long before anything would happen in a school, we wanna make sure our public safety and our education experts are assessing school by school any possibility of any threats that might be in your school."

McDonnell also made some budget changes to improve school safety.
