Gov. McDonnell Calls for Special Elections

November 16, 2010

Gov. Bob McDonnell is calling for special elections on Jan. 11 to fill General Assembly vacancies created by the elections of Sen. Robert Hurt and Delegate Morgan Griffith to Congress.

Hurt and Griffith rode the Republican wave that swept through Virginia on Nov. 2 that resulted in the GOP regaining three U.S. House seats.

McDonnell said Monday the State Board of Elections will certify the election results on Nov. 22.

The governor says candidates interested in participating in the special election will have until noon on Nov. 24 to file to run in the 19th Senate District and 8th House of Delegates District.

McDonnell said he is calling the election for Jan. 11 because the General Assembly starts its 2011 session on Jan. 12.
