Hampton Officers Kill Man Wielding Baseball Bat

July 2, 2012

Hampton police say a suspect armed with baseball bat was charging at two police officers when they fatally shot him.

Cpl. Jason Price tells media outlets that 26-year-old Bryant Michael Weiford was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred early Sunday morning.

Price says Weiford struck several vehicles with the bat before officers arrived at the scene. He then hit one officer's patrol car with the bat. Both officers ordered him to drop the bat but he charged at them.

The officers are on paid administrative leave. Their names weren't released.

The shooting is under investigation.
