The National Weather Service reports a "massive wind event" buffeted the Richmond area, leaving more than 100,000 electric customers without power.
Billed initially as a tornado, the storm lashed high-rises downtown with rain and debris picked up by high winds.
Media reports said portions of the outfield wall were blown down at The Diamond, the city's minor league baseball stadium.
Trees were downed throughout the Richmond metropolitan area and a section of I-64 was closed. There were no immediate reports of injuries or more serious damage.
Dominion Virginia Power reported more than 136,000 customers without power.
