Historic Culpeper House Gets Funds for Quake Repairs

A foundation working to repair earthquake damage at a historic home in Culpeper County is getting help from the federal government.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to provide nearly $750,000 to help pay for repairs to Salubria. The Germanna Foundation will have to raise $250,000 for the repairs, which will cost $1 million.
Architectural historian Doug Harnsberger tells The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/JBjXrX) that the earthquake damaged two chimneys. Bricks that fell off the chimneys damaged eight rafters in the attic.
The foundation also plans to put a new shingled roof on house.
The 1757 Georgian-style house was built for the widow of Colonial Gov. Alexander Spotswood.
Foundation executive director Karen Quanbeck says the repairs are expected to be completed around June 1.
