The Blue Ridge Marathon in Roanoke began with a moment of silence Saturday morning to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
The moment of silence was to show strength and a sense of solidarity with Boston as more than 1,400 runners took to the starting line of the annual marathon.
Roanoke Police said they stepped up security procedures at a number of spots throughout the course. They included the use of K9 dogs, random crowd spot checks and an increased law enforcement presence.
