An internal investigation is under way at a Roanoke Valley animal shelter following complaints of neglect and financial improprieties.
Officials with the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection and the Roanoke Valley SPCA announced the investigation on Monday. Media outlets report that the Roanoke municipal auditor's office and law enforcement officials also are investigating the shelter.
Earlier this month, Botetourt County officials removed the county's stray cats from the shelter. The move was in response to claims on social networking websites that cats were being euthanized despite cages being available to hold them.
The shelter is operated by a subsidiary of the Roanoke Valley SPCA. SPCA board president Barbara Dalhouse says the allegations are troubling.
